Dublin Castle was succeeded in his lifetime many roles. Built by the Normans as a defensive fortress, and it was a royal residence and the seat of a military garrison, and the seat of Parliament and the various courts. Now, here are the official receptions of foreign delegations, held the inauguration of the President of Ireland and other celebrations.

Construction of the fortress began in 1204 on the orders of King John Lackland and continued until 1230. The fortress was situated to the south-west of Dublin, then, and the city walls started from the north-east tower of the castle, went to the west and north, skirting the city and returns to the castle, to the south-western tower. Of the medieval buildings has survived only one tower. In the middle of the XVIII century, the castle was almost completely rebuilt, turning from the defensive fortifications in the grand palace with richly decorated rooms.

In 1907, the castle was stolen precious regalia of the Order of Saint Patrick - the star of the Order, and the sign, decorated with diamonds, sapphires, rubies and emeralds. Jewels were never found.

Now Dublin Castle - is not only a venue for official state events, but also one of the most popular tourist attractions of the capital of Ireland. Every year in early May on the grounds of the castle hosts music festival of contemporary music.

To get inside the castle and staterooms (if they are not occupied by the official state events) can only be in a group with a guide, but the entrance to the castle is free.
