Gate of St. Severin in the Middle Ages were a part of the city wall. After they took the main road to the south, leading to the beautiful city of Bonn.

The first mention of this building belong to the XIII century, at the time the gates gained quite a massive kind and asymmetric structure having a hexagonal tower, complete with riding gear. This tower, lying on a rectangular base, forms the gate building of four floors. After decades on the base it was completed two towers, but much smaller, just above them in the XVII century, built a special hipped roof.

Gates of the Holy Severin is the place where solemnly met senior figures, who arrived on a visit to Cologne. For example, in 1235 there was a meeting of the English Princess Isabella, the future wife of Frederick II, Holy Roman Emperor.

These impressive gates have long been one of the main entrances to the city, they are perfectly preserved its original appearance, in spite of the past century. Gates of the Holy Severin represent the grandeur of the defensive system of Cologne, which was peculiar to him, since the XIII century. Their shape was unusual for its time, but the grandeur and massive structures can not leave anyone indifferent tourist.

Not far from the gate in 2005 was found Bastion St. Severin, whose history dates back to 1474. But we know about this place was much later, when construction began on one of the city's subway lines. Since 1881, in the Museum of Natural History opened the gate, later renamed the Museum of Hygiene. In 1979, there is a community center that offers its premises for private events.
