Adjacent to the largest city in May of Calakmul in the state of Campeche, an area of 25 hectares, bordering with Guatemala, are the ruins of Balamku. His reputation the city owes a relatively recent discovery. In 1990, there was discovered a well-preserved wall-mounted 17-meter-long frieze. It remained virtually untouched and original paint. The frieze depicts a lizard. In May mythology, they were accompanied by a man from the earthly world to the underground.
The ruins were discovered by archaeologists Florentino Garcia Cruz. Major works were carried out here between 1994 and 1995, headed by scientist and archaeologist Ramon Carrasco.
The ruins are divided into four main architectural group. The central and northern parts are located near water sources. The latter is notable for the fact that on its territory there are well-preserved 15-meter figure.
The main attraction of the ruins of the Temple of the Jaguar Balamku considered. Inside you will see a statue of three people-jaguars, to a height of about four meters. The figures are interconnected with bas-reliefs, covered with images of parrots, monkeys and crocodiles. Local thread is striking in its detail. Once inside, in addition to the sculptures, you will see the entrance to the depths of the Temple, however, the passage to the tourists is strictly prohibited. But you can bring a flashlight to even slightly touch the hidden secrets of the ancient Zapotec.
City tour is available until five o'clock. On a walk through its streets you will take less than an hour, so a trip here often combine with a visit to the neighboring city of Calakmul.
