Episcopal Palace in Braga rightly tops the list of the most attractive places in the city. It is impossible to classify the time period of the palace, as the reconstruction of the building took place from the 14th century to the 17th century. Today, the palace is one of the oldest libraries in Portugal, which has more than 10,000 manuscripts and 300,000 books. Also in the palace it is rector of the University of Minho and regional archives.
The palace is located near the fortress-like Sé Cathedral. The building was built in the late 14th century and was once the residence of the bishops. Episcopal Palace consists of three different buildings, each of which has its own characteristics and built at different times. These buildings are in Gothic, Baroque and Mannerist.
The east wing overlooking the garden of St. Barbara, which was founded in the 14th century, the west wing overlooks the town square and was built in the 18th century in the style of the Portuguese Baroque. South Wing borders on Palace Square and consists of various buildings, the date of construction of which are 16, 17 and 18 centuries. In the north wing, which was built in 1160, is a large and beautiful hall, in which the archbishop used to take its visitors, and there were his chambers.
Over the long history of the palace took place many changes in its construction. After the restoration works that were carried out in the early 16th century, the palace was home to the Lord Lieutenant of the Royal Dovre. Then, in the palace of the chief was placed military warehouse of the city. Over the centuries, the palace was looted several times, and it occurred fires, but each time the building was restored.
