The second title of the castle Hoenbaden under which he is better known - Old Castle. On the western slope of the forested cliffs Batterte at an altitude of 410 meters above sea level are the ruins of the old castle.

During the 11-15 centuries Hoenbaden served as the residence for the Baden Margraves dynasty Tseringenov (old German race of Swabia). He founded and began the construction of the castle of the Margrave of Baden Herman II, 1102. Reconstruction of the castle in the Gothic style led the Margrave Bernard (1372-1431), and later Margrave Jacob (1431-1453) continued to expand the castle buildings. By the middle of the 15th century resulted in the construction of a new fortress, who moved residence and Hoenbaden castle was virtually destroyed by fire in 1599.

During the heyday there were more than a hundred different rooms and in the courtyard housed stables, barns and many other necessary outbuildings. In the cellar of the building is preserved primitive sewage system - one of the few famous medieval castles in the sewers.
