Theatre Museum in Athens was founded in 1938 by the Society of the Greek playwrights. The head of the museum was appointed a well-known historian Yiannis Sideris Greek, specializing in the history of the development of theater art in Greece. In 1976, as head of the museum took the Greek playwright Manolis Kores.

Since 1977, the Theatre Museum was housed in the basement of the Cultural Center of Athens. On the basis of the museum and also operates research and training center of the Greek theater.
