Arapovo monastery is located east of Asenovgrad 8 km near the village Arapovo. It was created in 1856 - it was the first monastic community, and three years later the community was transformed into the monastery. It is the only monastery, built in the period of Turkish rule. Since 1868 there is a school for the local poor.
A special feature of the monastery is the location - in the open field, while all other monasteries in Bulgaria were held on the hills, in the mountains or foothills. The situation is caused by Arapovo monastery located near the source of the Holy (Ayazma). Precisely because of this the monastery there is a particular feature of the external decoration - it is very reminiscent of a medieval fortress. However, it should be noted that the buildings themselves did not pursue the purpose of fortification, they were quite traditional in the period of the Bulgarian National Revival.
The monastery complex consists of several two- and three-story buildings (commercial and residential), a large cross-domed church.
Cathedral nave church with three apses was built on the model of the cathedrals Bachkovski and Gorno-Vodenskogo monasteries. In 1859 the church was consecrated in honor of the Holy Week. Ktitorskih inscription over the southern and the northern gate of the temple keep the names of the donors, at whose expense the church was built and decorated.
From the west, north and east of the temple rounding U-shaped building, erected in the period from 1856 to 1859, but has survived Western privately body. A little later the complex was attached to the L-shaped wing, which was restored in 1935. In 1860 on the territory of the cloister built three-story residential tower, a height of 9 meters. Tradition says that this tower has repeatedly found refuge Angel Governor, Rhodope Haiduk. In 1870 at the northern gate of the Ayazma - Sacred source - put the chapel nave with an apse and with a massive dome-shaped cylinder. The chapel was painted in 1875. And in the 30-ies of XX century, the bell tower was built.
In most churches Plovdiv District services were held in the Greek language, in Arapovo monastery served in the Bulgarian language. During the Russian-Turkish war of the monastery burned. Restoration began after the country's liberation from the Turkish occupation.
The monastery complex today - a cultural monument of national level.
