Holy Spirit Monastery is located in the center of Volgograd, on a small hill called Siberia Mountain. The date of foundation of the monastery is considered to be 1912, when it was converted into a monastery from episcopal monastery.

The first construction of the monastery was a year old wooden church, which opened in 1905, and three years later it was attached to the refectory and bell tower. Parish-wide fame received since 1908, when they were delivered to head Iliodor priesthood, known for his anti-government and patriotic speeches. Iliodor himself, according to many of his contemporaries, he was an excellent organizer, inspirational preacher, graduated from the St. Petersburg Theological Academy, was one of the editors of the publication of the Orthodox "Pochaev piece." The very same bishop's courtyard by the decision of City Council received the land for construction in 1904, and construction was completed in 1911.

Thanks to the efforts and donations of the congregation monastery expanded rapidly, added two warm winter refectory, the main entrance crowned belfry. Sam became a three-storey monastery building, printing houses are located here, a hotel, a school, handmade and monks' cells. The monastery was created between the buildings area of ​​10 thousand people, and a small square with a fountain and a swimming pool for the rest of the monks. A year later, in 1913, the monastery was transformed into a female.

During the revolutionary events and the establishment of Soviet power in 1918, the monastery was closed. In Soviet times, it housed a variety of institutions and organizations: a children's home, a penal colony, repair shop, military units, teacher's college dorm. During the Great Patriotic War, the locals used the monastery caves for shelter from the bombing, the Germans did not touch the audience in the monastery. After the war, the military railwaymen were demolished temples and dilapidated buildings, covered with catacombs.

Monastery referred back to the faithful after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1992. Today after reconstruction resurrected as a monastery on its territory are Orthodox University Sergei of Radonezh and seminary with him, the residence of the bishop of Volgograd.
