Vitebsk Town Hall - a symbol of Vitebsk, his proud memory of the times of independence and self-government. In 1597 the King of Poland and Sweden, Grand Duke of Lithuania Sigismund III Vasa granted the Magdeburg Law in Vitebsk. In Vitebsk, there was a self-governing body, and the magistrate was a wooden town hall on the market square.

In 1623 in Vitebsk riots occurred in connection with the uprising against the Orthodox population of the Uniate Church. For that in 1624 Vitebsk was deprived of the right to the city of Magdeburg, which is not able to maintain order and peace within its walls.

In 1644, for outstanding achievements in the war with Russia, King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania Sigismund III restored the Magdeburg Law in Vitebsk, in connection with what has been staged by the town hall and. The wooden town hall burned down several times, so in 1775 it was decided to build a brick town hall.

In 1883, at the Town Hall tower clock was installed and completed pinnacle in the form of a rotunda. In 1911 it was completed the third floor. Since 1924 in the former town hall is located museum.

In memory executed in the Great Patriotic War, the town hall partisans in the former gallows placed a memorial sign.
