Skovgora Museum - the only museum in Denmark, dedicated to the artistic heritage of a single family - Skovgor. It is located in the heart of Viborg, the old city hall of the 18th century. Here, not far from the Cathedral Viborg, presents the work of four generations Skovgorov and their contemporaries.
In 1726 a fire destroyed much of the city, including the cathedral, which is then reconstructed. However, in 1863, the cathedral burned down again and was rebuilt again. After a few decades, it was decided to decorate the walls of the cathedral frescoes. Artist Joachim Skovgor was a young student, an artist, helped to paint the walls of the cathedral. From 1901 to 1906 with a few assistants Joachim Skovgor performed works written by 51 fresco. City officials have been so proud of a new design of the cathedral, which decided to pay tribute to Skovgoru Wahlström, the museum built for him. The young artist asked that in the museum were presented not only his work but also his entire family, as many of his family members were also gifted artists. Instead, the family had to donate to the museum's private collection of his paintings.
In 1937 the museum opened in the building where it is located now. Until then, he was placed in the other rooms, not far from the cathedral. The collection of paintings has expanded over the years, contributed to this donation from the family, as well as acquisitions made by the museum on their own. Today, the museum not only contains a collection of paintings, written Skovgor family members, but also the work of their contemporaries, thus presenting visitors a rich collection of works of art 1830-1960's. In addition, the museum presents a collection of furniture, silver and ceramics.
The museum has a gift shop and coffee shop, where you can relax and have a snack.
