Viborg Cathedral - one of the most historically important Danish churches. The modern building was built in the 19th century.
Even before the Viking era Viborg was one of the four most important religious centers of ancient Denmark. Viborg Cathedral was the place where in 1065 was with the episcopal see. In 1080, the King of Denmark Knut IV donated several farms on the content of the cathedral and diocese.
In 1501, a fire damaged the western part of the church and destroyed the roof. Her restored by performing a new roof in red brick, the most common building material of the time. By 1530, the church passed into the hands of the followers of the teachings of Martin Luther. Many Catholic priests have been sent to jail for disagreeing to adopt new laws and go to Lutheranism. Despite the desire for a new Viborg, he retained many Catholic traditions much better than other cities of Denmark.
The fire damaged the church again in 1567. Due to lack of funds to repair the church was closed, and from 1800 to 1814 was used as a warehouse for grain. In the second half of the 19th century, the cathedral was rebuild brick from the old temple remained only the Romanesque crypt. In 1876, construction was completed and the church was consecrated.
In 1899-1914 years the artist I. Skovgor painted walls and arches of the church frescoes of biblical scenes.
