Augustow Canal - a monument of hydraulic architecture of the first half of the XIX century. Channel 102 has a length of 8 kilometers and connects the River Vistula and Neman. Since 2008 Augustow Canal is located in a protected area by UNESCO.

Construction of the canal began in 1824 and continued for 15 years. The Russian Empire was planning to establish another water trade route to the Baltic Sea, bypassing the boundaries of Prussia, because the Berlin government introduced a very high transit tariffs.

Canal Project was engineer Lt. Col. Ignatius Prandzinsky, supervised the construction of Lieutenant Colonel John Paul Lelewel. The channel was built with the latest science and technology of the time and included unique system of canals and locks. On the waterway was constructed 19 sluice dams, 18 locks, 21 cameras and 14 bridges. At that time the cost of construction of the Augustow Canal has managed in a very large sum of 1, 5 million in silver.

Currently Augustow Canal runs along the two countries: Poland and Belarus. In Poland, the channel has long been renovated and used for tourist purposes. On the Polish territory is located 80 km and 15 locks. Belarus is 22, 2 and 3 kilometer Gateway: Nemnovo, Dombrovka and Valkushak. By the reconstruction of the channel was started only in the 1990s. Now the channel is used for tourist cruises and for active boating. The water in the canal is very clean, which led to the multiplication of valuable fish species trout and grayling.
