Cathedral of St. James - the most important church in the city of Szczecin, was built by the inhabitants of the city on the model of the Church of St. Mary in Lübeck. It is the largest church in Pomerania, for many years after the Reformation was part of the Pomeranian Evangelical Church, but after World War II was the Catholic church. Cathedral of St. James is located in the Old City.

The church was built in 1187 on the site of a wooden chapel. Work on the expansion of the temple continued until the fourteenth century. In the second half of the thirteenth century it was established pentagonal altar, next to which was built a free-standing chapel. At the other end of the Gothic nave were built two towers. During a storm in 1456, one of these towers collapsed and destroyed part of the church, including the western part of the nave. The reconstruction lasted until 1503 under the direction of master John Benecke. It was built a central tower instead of the previous two.

The church was destroyed again in 1677 during the Danish-Swedish war and rebuilt in Baroque style in 1693.

At the end of the nineteenth century was an overhaul of the temple. In 1894 it was installed 119 meters tall spire crowning the tower of the temple. The church was equipped with electric heating.

Air raids on the night of August 16, 1944 during the Second World War led to the destruction of the church strong. After the war, we wanted to demolish the temple, but it was deemed that the restoration work will cost less demolition. In 1974, repairs were completed, was later restored and spire.
