Female Pokrovsky Monastery, founded in 1364, is located on the lower bank of the Kamenka. The monastery is known as a place of exile undesirable representatives of noble families and royal families. In the basement of the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Mother of God is the tomb, where, among other "crowned" the nuns buried the wife of Grand Prince of Moscow Vasily III Solomonija Saburov, the daughter of Alexander Ivan III, the fifth wife of Ivan the Terrible Anna Vasilchikova. Among those exiled to a monastery - Boris Godunov's daughter Ksenia and the first wife of Peter I Evdokia Lopuchin. The one-storey stone building of the XVII century restored interior of the Departmental house, which was in the cave monastery prison.
The ensemble of the monastery consists of white stone wall with 9 towers, including two towers with stone tents, unique Annunciation Gate Church, Pokrovsky Cathedral with an attached bell tower, the Conception Refectory Church, several monastic buildings.
Center of the monastery is St. Basil's Cathedral, which was built in 1518. Its white walls and ceramic floor could create an impression underlined asceticism but great icons and works of art of sewing, which are the pride of the museum, making the interior a refined and festive. Holy Gates with Gate Church of the Annunciation, built in the years 1510-1518 - a kind of fortress tower with two arches - large and small travel for pedestrians. It is a unique example of ancient architecture, which combines the functions of a castle tower and the church. In fact the church is located in the upper part of the square plan of the tower and a small quadrangle, surrounded on two sides by a gallery with arched openings. In composition it repeats a great St. Basil's Cathedral, although decorated richer.
The whole complex Pokrovsky monastery is under UNESCO protection.
