In the period from VII to XVIII century St. Gallen abbey itself was considered. The founder is considered a monk named Gallus, a native of Ireland. With the 719, it was decided to begin construction of the monastery.

Abbey Library St.Gallen is one of the oldest libraries in Europe. She has been listed as a World Heritage Site due to its unique interior and incredible collection of rare books and manuscripts from the Middle Ages.

At the entrance you can immediately see the inscription in Greek: "Pharmacy of the soul." Immediately visitors will be asked to change shoes or wear special slippers in order not to damage the inlaid wood floor. You can then enter the room.

Abbey Library is located in a separate building next to the cathedral. This building is in the pompous Baroque Peter Tamboma project. Rooms in which there are countless shelves with books - rococo. The ceiling is the largest of them is decorated with frescoes depicting scholars in the four ecumenical councils.

In addition to regular rooms, cluttered shelves, height from the floor to the ceiling, where there are special storage, which is full of rare documents and manuscripts, which are almost never put on display. Photographing is prohibited.

The list of the treasures of different cultures of the library is truly amazing - there are a considerable number of Irish manuscripts, more than a dozen manuscripts belonging to the seventh-eighth century, including a Latin manuscript of the Gospels 750 years.
