Castello Scaligero

Castle Scaligero - a powerful fortress in the town of Sirmione, surrounded by the waters of Lake Garda, built in the second half of the 12th - early 13th century as part of the fortifications around Verona to protect against attacks from Milan. Later, the castle became part of the Venetian Republic and was used to control for its "continental" population. Once near the town of Peschiera was built another fort, Scaliger Rocca lost its importance and has long been turned into a warehouse. Only at the beginning of the 20th century it became the property of the Italian government.

Today, this fairytale castle open to the public, dominates the resort Sirmione: it is surrounded by a moat, which is "patrolling" swans and wild ducks .  The castle is located in a strategically important place - from the land to him it was possible to get close with just one hand .  To get to it, and today we can only suspension bridge .  Unfortunately, little remains of the interior decoration of the castle, and its territory is not reached us in its original form - inside you can admire except the unique medieval ramparts and views of Lake Garda .  Two towers crowned teeth make a lasting impression - a real symbol of the great power of Mastino della Scala I, during whose reign began the first phase of construction of the castle .  In addition to the main courtyard have been preserved with another tower, three corner guard towers and two entrances .  Later a secondary courtyard was laid out to the south of the main, as well as the small southern gate .

I must say that along the shores of Lake Garda has built several castles similar to Scaliger Rocca and constructed with the same defensive purpose. But perhaps it Scaligero Castle can be called one of the best preserved in Italy.
