University of Latvia Botanical Garden is located in the capital of Latvia. It was founded in 1922, and since then constantly updated. Now, in an area of 15 hectares has a collection consisting of 5,400 different plants. Collections are unique, they are represented plants all over the world and geographical zones.
Every visitor to the Botanical Garden will be able to choose plants for home, garden, pond and other objects from a wide range of plants presented. Specialists working here, you can get detailed information on horticulture and floriculture, as well as plant protection and special care of them. In addition, by prior arrangement, you can take part in workshops covering issues of plant propagation, especially their growth, information on plant diseases and pests, as well as their application in everyday life.
In the greenhouses of the Botanical Garden of the University of Latvia are represented plants in the tropics, subtropics, succulents, and azaleas. Central to the greenhouse complex is the palm conservatory, which presents subtropical plants. The height of the Palm House is 24 meters on the exhibition features some 400 plants. There is quite a large collection of palms, presented the 48th species, as well as one of the oldest plants greenhouses - Ficus macrophylla growing here since 1928. You could also look at the subtropical fruit crops: banana, fig, lemon and others.
In a greenhouse, which shows the flora of the tropics, always high humidity and temperature. Here you can see the 350 species of plants. Especially well represented family of Aralia, collection of tropical ferns, orchids. The pools can admire the largest plant family Nymphaeaceae - Victoria - which will be remembered for its fragrant flowers.
In a greenhouse succulents about 700 species of plants, 345 of which - cactuses. Succulents - a herbaceous or woody plants adapted to living in arid conditions. Cacti are different from other succulents presence of thorns.
At the Botanical Garden is another greenhouse, which presents the azaleas. This is a low evergreen shrubs, obtained by multi-stage crossing. The first varieties appeared in Europe in the 19th century. The first collection of azaleas was founded in 30 years of the 20th century, but it was lost during the Second World War. The present collection began collecting in 1956. Currently, the collection consists of 124 cultivar.
Herbaceous perennials in the garden collection appeared in 20 - 30-ies. 20th century, when the first rock garden was created. Around the middle of the last century was the exposition Alpina plant, located on a geographical basis. Today, exposure herbaceous perennials has about 1,300 varieties, with the collection is available from spring to fall. Decorative and environmental exposure includes seven gardens: rocky garden, floksovy garden, garden roses, dahlia garden, rhododendron garden, rose garden, heather garden. Each of them can be divided into 3 groups of landings: background, basic and advanced.
The most extensive exhibition of open ground is an arboretum, covering an area of 9 hectares. It was founded in the 30s, the first saplings were brought from Berlin nursery. First, trees and shrubs for the systematic disposal principle; planting of plant families. However, the plan landings was observed only partially. In the 50-ies. the last century, the collection was laid tui and cypresses. Later, trees and shrubs were grown from cuttings imported from other botanical gardens.
The newest and so far the only one in Latvia is the exposure of marsh plants, established in 2006. In the area of 120 m², conditions close to the marsh. Here the plants are grown, typical of wetlands in Latvia: Andromeda, cranberry and others.
Since the founding of the Botanical Gardens worked on the study of mosses and lichens. On the territory of Latvia recorded about 500 species of moss, about 40 species found in gardens, they grow on the ground, the roofs, on the rocks and walls of greenhouses. In addition, the garden revealed fungi, settled here spontaneously. And there are mushrooms as visible to the naked eye and microscopic.
