Guora Gate, or Great Gate, the main entrance was in the old town of Rethymnon and the Venetian period are the only surviving part of the ancient city wall. Although over the centuries there have been many changes, but the big gate and enough recognizable today.

Built in an ancient building was after the expansion of the city in 1540-1570 under the project of Venetian architect Michele San Michele. The name of the gate got in honor of J. Rethymnon. Guora. This entry into the city led to the central square of the old Rethymno, which are important public buildings.

Gates is a semi-circular arch width of 2, 6 m. Initially, the building was topped by a triangular pediment decorated with a relief depicting a winged lion of St. Mark (Venice emblem). In 1670, according to Turkish tradition, near the gates of the mosque was built, which was named after the Valide Sultan, mother of Sultan Ibrahim. The minaret, built in 1878, can be seen near the gate to the side of the square. Due to the constant expansion of the city after the period of the Turkish occupation of the fortress walls have been gradually demolished to make way for the construction of houses.

The monumental Venetian building, or rather, his surviving fragments, can be seen today at the beginning of the street Etnikis Antistasios. Gates Guora deprived of its former greatness and practically pressed into the walls of houses on both sides of the streets, but they continue to remind us about the long history of the city of Rethymnon and the importance of the Venetian period.
