The Church of Agia Marina is located in the southern Bulgarian city of Plovdiv. This is perhaps the most significant city Orthodox church. The first religious buildings on the site date back to the period of antiquity.

Around the fifth century there was a small church dedicated to the Apostle Paul, destroyed a century later. Since then, the church building has been repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt again. The last reconstruction took place in the middle of the XIX century, which is called the period of the Bulgarian national revival.

The church is a basilica, built of stone netesannogo, the lower part of the perimeter of which is surrounded by an arcade with columns, this gives the temple similar to the Byzantine religious architecture. Also not far from the main building is unparalleled in Bulgaria shestiyarusnaya semnadtsatimetrovaya wooden belfry.

The interior of the temple of the most interesting is the iconostasis, a height of about 21 meters, which depicts biblical scenes and creatures. On each side of the iconostasis are the image of the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ by Bulgarian artists Stanislav Dospevski.

Picturesque architecture and atmosphere of antiquity surrounding the temple made the place very popular among Christian pilgrims, and among leisure travelers.
