One of the most important symbols of the city of Petrozavodsk, as well as its main gate of a railway station. Since the beginning of construction (1916), and before the start of the Great Patriotic War the station building is located two kilometers from the center of the city, namely in the area of present Pervomaisky Avenue. When in 1946 ended the occupation of the city, the city of Petrozavodsk is almost completely in ruins. It was at this time have the opportunity to alter the architectural map of the city. First with the idea to move the station to the central part of the city was Dmitri Maslennikov - architect, who led in those years of management of the architecture of the Lithuanian SSR.
Already in 1946, the Republican government has approved a new plan for the construction of the station. Soon after work began on the embodiment of the new plan, transport, as well as the reconstruction of roads. In addition, the demolition of old warehouses located on the site of the proposed station. By 1955, the city was built station. Its author was the architect of Leningrad V. Tsipulin. The terrain is quite demanded the original author's solution, and for this reason the station has its unique façade not only the platform but also with part of the station.
During his stay in power, Nikita Khrushchev reforms, and particularly the fight against all sorts of excesses, touched even architecture. Similarly overkill just became a steeple. It helped only that the decree was given very late, and the spire had already prepared, and do it has been nowhere. The new station building perfectly fit into the architecture of all Petrozavodsk, changing for the better layout of the entire city. Thus it happened that the area located in front of Lake Onega, has become particularly important in terms of urban development.
Until such time as the station was built, it was considered a prospect street, which has no beginning and no end. After the station square has made its views compositional completion, the prospectus has become really the most central street of the city. Railway Station Square was built in 1950 and later became known as the square named after Yuri Gagarin.
The station building is an integral axial symmetrical composition. Despite the fact that it has a greater extent, as a hull length of 82 meters, it does not look monotonous. Accommodation railway complex thus avoiding all the drawbacks inherent in enfilade reception, and at the regional level to share operating rooms and waiting area. The core of the train station was the room two tiers of windows, which is connected on the first floor of a building with ticket offices, tunnels and service areas, which lead to the platforms. The second floor has a restaurant and lounge. Overlapping this floor it is based on the architrave of columns located at the balcony railings.
The most important thing in the composition - a three-story central volume with monumentnym chetyrehkolonnym recessed portico. Located above it all is the end of the gazebo in the form of an octagonal turret, which is surmounted by a spire. The central projection is a portal, which is the gate of the city; side corbels similar to kordegarii that are guardrooms, which are typical for processing entries of classicism of the 18-19th centuries. The station building is decorated with stucco luxury, and has developed the Corinthian order. In 1979, near the train station was built baggage processing center under the supervision of EV Resurrection. This center has a main entrance on one side with the platform.
In March 1955 there was a meeting of the working people on the forecourt, which was devoted to the inauguration of the new station. March 5 from the station platform off the first train passenger type Petrozavodsk - Leningrad. On the same day the train from Murmansk brought the first passengers on Petrozavodsk Station.
