Opole Zoo - zoological garden on the island of Bolek, located in the city of Opole in southern Poland. The zoo covers an area of ​​20 hectares and is home to 1,000 animals of 227 species (89 species of birds, 72 species of mammals, 43 species of invertebrates and 11 species of reptiles). Opole Zoo is the second largest zoo in Upper Silesia after the zoo in Chorzow.

The history of the zoo dates back to 1912, when the island was created by a private menagerie. In 1937 it was bought by the city administration. While the zoo held territory in the 1, 5 hectares, specializing in birds. Here lived exotic species: flamingos, pelicans, parrots, and white storks and gray herons. Bird cages were built special, and the rest of the territory occupied by the pond and lawns.

In 1937 the zoo was opened to the inhabitants of the city. Soon, Hermann Goering donated the lion park, and African monkeys, antelopes and deer. On site restaurant was opened.

In the war years, the zoo has been completely destroyed. Restoration work began in 1952 and the grand opening took place in July of next year.

The rapid development of the Opole Zoo began in 1998, when its territory was expanded. Most of the buildings were built in the late twentieth century, which makes the Opole Zoo one of the most modern in Poland.

Particular attention is given to the animals in the zoo, endangered such as the pygmy hippo, serval, lynx, jaguars, kangaroos, red-tailed lemur and others.

Currently in Opole Zoo is part of the European Association of Zoos.
