Located on the Turkish part of Cyprus Selimiye Mosque earlier, which is not uncommon on the island, was a Christian church - Hagia Sophia. Its construction began in 1209, but because of the grandiose plans of architects who wanted to make it look like a medieval Gothic cathedrals in France, completion and consecration of the temple took place only in 1326. As expected, both inside and outside of this building was a magnificent finish: his decorated statues, paintings, exquisite wall paintings, frescoes and bas-reliefs. But due to the fact that this area has repeatedly captures the different peoples of the building and its interior decoration has changed significantly, because each of the invaders brought him some of his changes. Also, the building has gone through several major earthquakes, after which it had serious repair.

With the advent of the Ottomans in 1570, the cathedral were taken almost all the sculptures and works of art, and the tombstones covered with carpets. There was only a statue of St. Sophia, which was moved to the street near the temple. In addition, on the west side of the temple were completed two tall minarets.

Later, in 1954, the church received a new name - Selimiye. The mosque was named in honor of the Turkish Sultan Selim II, who was one of the rulers of the Ottoman Empire, and was involved in the capture of the island.

Selimiye Mosque is one of the main Muslim temples Nicosia. Currently, this structure looks much more modest than before, but it still amazes visitors with its grandeur and beauty.
