Zaikonospassky Monastery (Spassky for the icon next to it) is in the center of Moscow, on Nikolskaya Street in China Town. The monastery was founded in 1600 by Boris Godunov. The name of the monastery was due to its location - behind the benches where traded icons.

Stone Cathedral of the Icon of Our Saviour the Image in the monastery was founded in 1660, under Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich. Donated funds for the construction of the governor - Prince FF Volkonsky.

Following the devastation of the fires, the monastery was rebuilt several times. Buildings and churches of the monastery rebuilt by the architect dammed (Baroque), as well as project architects Transfiguration, Ivanov and Michurin.

In the 1630s there was a whole people in the monastery school. In it, the first time in Russia began to teach Latin and Greek. Supervised learning Arseny Greek. In 1667, the monastery established a school, and then convert it to school, ready to clerks of the Order of secret affairs. In 1687, the monastery moved to the Slavic-Greek-Latin Academy. It is headed by the largest Greek theologians - brothers and monks Sofronii Ioanniky Likhud. Students of the Academy were people who became famous later. Among them was Mikhail Lomonosov.

During the Soviet period (1929), the monastery was closed.

New History Zaikonospassky monastery began in 1992. The Cathedral of the Savior began the service. He was awarded the status - "Patriarchal Compound". In 2010, the Holy Synod decided to open Zaikonospassky Stauropegial monastery in China-town in Moscow. The monastery was isolated from the Patriarch's monastery.
