Church and Monastery of the Annunciation was built in Marsala in the late 15th century on the site of an ancient temple, which was the sacristy of the new church, and the other surrounding his premises have been converted into a chapel. One of them - dedicated to St. Onofrio - the now lost marble statue became the burial place of princes Petrulla. In the 16th century chapel was built for the noble family Grinyani, which has long been a statue of the Madonna del Popolo works of Domenico Gagini. Today it is kept in the Cathedral of Marsala.
The interior of the church, except for the chapel of the Madonna del Popolo - a reflection of past eras. Numerous plaques decorated the floors and walls, among them - plaque notary Alanya Rosario di Mozia (1799) and fine sarcophagi and Grinyani Rekvizens families who have made the church his mausoleum. Once the Church of the Annunciation was one of the most important monuments of the Renaissance in Marsala.
The collapse of the roof and the destruction of most of the situation by bombing during the Second World War are great difficulties for the restoration of the building. The present interior of the church seems to be cold and uninviting - did not help the marble flooring, steel spiral staircase in the main hall and the roof partially preserved.
In recent years, the church has been adapted for the city library, which stores found in 1979 documents from historical archives. In 1996, he completed the restoration of the Convent of San Pietro, and a large part of the library was moved to, but historical archive remained in the church building.
Especially valuable is the monastery of the Church of the Annunciation. The oldest part was built in the 14-15th centuries. Inside you can see frescoes, dating back 15-16 centuries and executed in a style characteristic rather for the eastern Sicily. In 1862 the monastery complex became the property of the Ministry of Finance, which in the late 19th - early 20th century passed it carabinieri (Mounted Police). After World War II, the monastery was abandoned and gradually began to decline - even its top floor was demolished for safety reasons.
Only in the 1990s, we began restoration work, during which has been restored monastery courtyard. Right in the center of the well and found chan, were part of some of the underground premises, the purpose of which remains unknown. Today the monastery complex is located Exhibition of Contemporary Art, and held different views.
