The oldest park of Lithuania is the Aukštaitija National Park, it is located 100 kilometers north of Vilnius. Park was founded in 1974, its territory is more than 400 sq.km. Approximately 2% of the park is strictly protected area, access to it is possible only when accompanied by park employees.

The park is covered with forests, but 15% of the park occupied by ponds, namely 126 beautiful lakes and rivers. The most significant of the lake is - Kretuonas area of ​​8 square kilometers and Tauragnas 29 - 60, 5 sq.m. The latter is the deepest in Aukshtayskom park.
