The Citadel - a fortification located near the center of the city. It is located on a hill formed by three small mountains: Shembeka, Poznan and Zhebratskaya. In terms of landscape geology Citadel can be interpreted as a remnant of a plateau at the Lviv plateau. In the mid-17th century, this place was fought with the shelling of the city by Russian troops besieging it later - Turkish troops and their ally, right-bank hetman Doroshenko. Projected Austrian military fortifications of the Citadel after the suppression of the Polish insurrection in 1848. The approaches to the Citadel strengthened three tranches of approximately one and a half kilometers from the center of the Citadel. At the end of the 19th century it was built nine auxiliary forts.

After the torture chambers of the concentration camp "Citadel" has been almost two hundred and eighty thousand people, half of whom died from hunger and disease.
