Roman Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, which is also known as New Cathedral - a temple in the Austrian city of Linz.
Construction of the cathedral began in 1856 by Bishop Franz Josef Rudidzhierom. The first stone was solemnly laid in 1862. In 1924, Bishop Johannes Maria Gfolner consecrated constructed building of the cathedral.
New Cathedral is the largest church in Austria, but not the highest. It was originally planned to make the spire of the cathedral above, however, the project was not approved because of Austro-Hungary at the time no building could not have been higher than the Cathedral of St. Stephen in Vienna. In this regard, the spire of the cathedral in Linz made shorter than 2 meters than the Viennese cathedral. Its height is 133 meters.
The architecture of the cathedral deserve special attention stained glass windows. The most famous are the stained glass windows depicting the history of Linz, as well as those that contain portraits of various sponsors construction of the church. During World War II, several windows, especially in the southern part of the cathedral, were damaged. Rather than restore the original windows were replaced with stained-glass windows that display contemporary art.
