Linkoping Cathedral is the central church of the local diocese and the second largest cathedral in Sweden (after the cathedral in Uppsala). Modern buildings more than 800 years, but the history of the cathedral began much earlier - with the construction on the site of 1000's of small wooden church. Construction of the first stone of the building, as evidenced by the sources was launched in 1120 and completed in 1140-1150-ies. According to extant documents in the 50s of the 12th century in the building for some time it housed the synod.

The first building of the cathedral was a sleek basilica in the Romanesque style, and its size was half of the modern cathedral. Around the 1230s the building was expanded to the east, in the cathedral, a new altar, choir and transept that have survived to the present day. After 20 years, the cathedral was again increased on the eve of the coronation of King Valdemar Birgessona. Between 1308 and 1360 years, during the time of Bishop Charles it was extended nave and western facade was built in the style of the Cologne Cathedral. It was then that the Cathedral has reached its current levels. It is likely that at the same time been created and limestone sculpture communication. Peter, the patron saint of the church.

In the mid-16th century cathedral was damaged by fire twice, causing the roof was destroyed, moldings and stained glass windows. In the years immediately before and after 1800 in the Cathedral of a lot of restoration work was carried out. For example, in 1812, it was carried out so-called "big cleaning" of the interior, as a result of which a large part of the decor of the 16th and 17th centuries has been destroyed or sold. In the years 1965-1967 in the cathedral were repaired, and the church regained its roof and spire, which were removed in the late 18th century.
