Among the most interesting places in the Irish city of Limerick special attention certainly deserves a small, but highly entertaining Limerick Museum, also known as the City Museum of Jim Kemma. The impressive collection of the museum will acquaint you with the history, culture and traditions of Limerick. The museum is run by the Limerick City Council and is available to everyone absolutely (entrance to the museum is free).
Limerick Museum was founded in 1906 and originally housed in a building where there is the City Art Gallery. During his more than a century the museum repeatedly changed its position yet finally settled in the heart of Limerick, the so-called King's Island in the building of the Town Hall, not far from popular attractions such as King John's Castle and the Cathedral of the Holy Virgin Mary. In 1992, the Museum Limerick won the first prize of the world famous Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
Excellent collection of Limerick Museum is vast and varied, and perfectly illustrates the history of Limerick, covering a huge amount of time - from the prehistoric era to the present day. You will find an impressive collection of artifacts found during excavations in Limerick and its environs, weapons (including a sword bestowed Limerick Elizabeth I), coins, garments, Limerick lace patterns, and more. A special pride of the museum is its historical archive - various documents, among them the town charter signed by King Charles II, books and pamphlets, photographs, maps, etc.
