One of the main attractions of the Irish city of Limerick is undoubtedly entertaining Hunt Museum.
The history of the museum began with a private collection of John and Gertrude spouses Hunt . For the first time a magnificent collection of ancient artifacts and objects of fine and decorative art (or rather, part of it) has been presented to the public in 1978 . As a temporary exhibition collection housed in the Exhibition Hall of the National Institute of Higher Education (now - University of Limerick) . Meanwhile, the search for a suitable building in which it was possible to properly organize the preservation and demonstration of antiquities, unsuccessful . As a "new home" a unique collection of spouses Hunt was chosen the historic customs house built in the 18th century by the Italian architect Davis Dyukarta and is a fine example of the so-called Palladium architecture . In February 1997, after a long and extensive renovation, Hunt Museum finally opened its doors to visitors .
The museum's collection consists of about 2,000 exhibits, most of which is related to Ireland, perfectly illustrating the development of its history and culture (the earliest dating back to the Neolithic era). Hunt Museum is famous and unique artifacts from ancient Greece, Egypt and Rome. On display are a variety of archaeological finds, ceramics, bronze, silver and ivory, weapons and tools, statues of wood and stone decorations, church relics, paintings and much more. Among the most interesting museum values should perhaps be noted the bronze horse by Leonardo da Vinci, Antrim cross of bronze and enamel (9th century), as well as works by Pablo Picasso and Auguste Renoir.
The Hunt Museum regularly hosts a variety of temporary exhibitions and thematic lectures and workshops for both children and adults.
