The National Museum is one of the most important in Peru. He stands on a stage on the importance and prestige of the National Museum of Archaeology, Anthropology and History of Peru in Lima. The museum was opened in 1988 in the capital of Peru. In 1991, the museum building is damaged by fire, after which the museum was transferred to the building of the former Ministry of Fisheries.

The National Museum in their collections have thousands of original works of various periods in the history of Peru, received during the archaeological research, as well as artifacts returned by who illegally tried to take out of the territory of Peru smugglers. In the museum you can see reproductions of many famous ancient Andean artifacts primarily Stela Lanson (900 and 200 BC.), Found during archaeological excavations at Chavin de Huantar, culture Moche mummy found in 1987 when excavations of the pyramids near the town of Sipan. Also in the museum contains more than 2500 historical works of art of the colonial and republican periods, as well as more than 15 500 exhibits of contemporary art.

On the sixth floor of the museum housed a photo exhibition Yuyanapak Couple Rekordar (Yuyanapaq Para Recordar). This exhibition was created to document for posterity the internal conflict in Peru, which occurred in the period from 1980 to 2000.

In the halls of the museum are constantly conferences and educational seminars. Also in the spacious halls of the museum was held V Summit of Heads of State and Government of the European Union, Latin America and the Caribbean 16-17 May 2008.
