Not far from the Turkish city of Kusadasi is Mount Pion, which locals call Panayir Dagi. The mountain is 155 meters and it has a beautiful view of the ancient Byzantine walls, remarkably well preserved to this day. The territory belongs to the Mountain Peony National Park so the hill is covered with its natural vegetation. More than half of the slopes are immersed in the dense thickets of the Mediterranean Macc. In addition, there is growing very rare in the eastern Mediterranean evergreen tree - oak padolistny. Its magnificent and brilliant crown with small smooth leaves can be seen from afar, because usually the height of the oak is about ten meters. The rest of the flora is a mix of fairly high cypress and maples along with an abundance of plantain, laurel and oleander. In some places there are different kinds of pine.
Under the north-eastern slope Panayir Dagi is the famous Cave of the Seven Sleepers. In it, according to legend, seven young men of Ephesus had been walled up alive at the time of the persecution of Christians in the second century. After nearly two centuries they were found alive and healthy, but they were in a deep sleep. After the earthquake opened a passage in the cave, and young people have awakened, slept thus about 200 years. In this way God wanted to restore the faith of Christians in a wonderful Sunday. After the death of Emperor Theodosius ordered the young men to bury them in the cave and build in their honor piligrimskuyu fortress.
On the northern slope of Mount Pion in the tenth century BC, a large noisy at that time the city of Ephesus, named after the Amazons of Ephesus, the beloved son of the ruler of Athens. The town quickly became a major trading port and was so rich that it is not even built the fortress walls, hoping only to the authority of their temples and politicians. The sea level at that time was 57 meters higher than at present, so the city was located on the Aegean Sea. Ephesus - the largest and best preserved ancient city in Turkey. There are perfectly preserved ancient sites: the famous church of the Virgin Mary, the Library of Celsus, a large Roman theater, baths, Fountain of Trajan, the Odeon. Another interesting construction is considered and the Temple of Athena.
