St. Teodora de la Sihla Church

The majestic St. Teodora de la Sihla Church, located in the central part of the Chisinau city - a cathedral, Metropolitan Church of Bessarabia belongs to the Romanian Orthodox Church.

The building is modern cathedral in the pseudo-Byzantine architectural style was built back in 1895 in a chapel at the first female Zemstvo school. The author of this work was made by a prominent architect Alexander Bernardazzi. Two entrances at the main facade is decorated with two well-viewed ceremonial terraces and shell limestone colonnade.

Single-nave building with a three-part division. The dominant position occupied projecting beyond the walls octagonal nave, which is crowned by a high hipped roof and dome. The first floor has a view of the temple of ancient porch, with regard to the second floor, it made a ward.

The temple is rich decor. Its walls were built of two-colored limestone blocks. Particular attention is drawn to her beautiful arched openings, powerful columns, cast iron grates and cornice. Hlávka bulbous shape on the perimeter of the drum, turrets crowning the facades, as well as the overlap of the central cupola, made in the shape of the bulb - all this underlines the importance of a monumental building.

Temple, the construction of which money is donated Princess Vyazemskaya, until 1944 was subordinated to the Romanian Patriarchate, and bore the name of St. Theodore. During the period of militant atheism, the church was used as a gym, and then there was a museum of atheism. In 1974, during the restoration of the temple were destroyed frescoes and laid concrete church altar.

The solemn consecration of the cathedral took place only in 1992. The revival of the church took place in 1993. In 1995, shortly before the 100th anniversary of the founding of the temple, he was re-painted fresco specialist George Yenakiyevo. Carved iconostasis for the Cathedral performed a famous artist Vasily of Humulesht and local icon painter Yuri Lungu gave the church made in the same style icons for the iconostasis.
