One of the most famous and interesting sights of the Greek island of Kalymnos, undoubtedly, is the citadel of Chora (or Paleochora) - a medieval village, nestled on top of a steep rocky hill, at an altitude of about 255 meters above sea level. The settlement, for centuries the former chief administrative center of the island, located in the southwestern part of Kalymnos, and covers an area of about 3 hectares.
Citadel Choirs is a typical medieval town-fortress with massive external walls, one-story and two-story houses, are built close to each other, and beautiful temples. Excellent visibility and hindered several approaches to the fortress provides residents of Kalymnos timely and reliable protection in case of pirate attacks, constantly terrorizing the island, and other invaders.
The original castle was built probably in the 10-11 centuries, as evidenced by a number of architectural fragments. During the time of the domination of the island of the Knights Hospitallers (1309-1522 gg.) Citadel was enlarged and partially rebuilt. Most of the buildings that we can see today date from the late 15th century. By the early 18th century, the number of pirate attacks has significantly decreased, and the inhabitants of the fortress began to slowly settle outside its walls, as well as to develop coastal land. Over time, the stronghold was finally abandoned.
Today the citadel of Chora is an important historical and architectural monument and is very popular among tourists. And, despite the fact that most of the actual citadel lies in ruins, walk through the streets of this medieval town will give you a lot of fun. Special attention is given ten beautiful ancient temples that have managed to survive the century and well preserved to this day.
