One of the main attractions of the Greek city of Polygyros (capital of Halkidiki) is an interesting archaeological museum, located in the center of the square Irou. Unfortunately, at this time in the museum being overhauled and it is closed to the public. Completion and opening of the museum is planned for the summer of 2014.
The museum preserves archaeological finds, collected from all over the peninsula. Here are unique artifacts from ancient Stagira, Toroni Polygyros, Ierissos, Stratoni, Pyrgadikia, Afitos, and the ancient Olinfosa. The museum's collection covers a vast period of time from the Bronze Age and ending the Roman period.
In the museum you can see ceramics, jewelry, sculpture, various funerary artifacts and much more. Among the many exhibits of special interest Kouros the Archaic period, weapons and jewelry of the late Archaic and Classical periods and the marble head of Dionysus (4th century BC, the ancient Afitos). Also pay attention to the vessel (crater) decorated with black-figure vase painting of grow into (late 6th century BC) and two marble grave statues from Staratoni (1st century BC). The huge importance and artifacts found in the city and the ancient burial Olinfosa (dating back to the Archaic and Classical period), perfectly illustrate the life and experiences of the day.
In 1998, the museum opened an exhibition "Three colony of Andros Chalkidiki: Sana'a, Akanfos and Stageira", among many exhibits which are of particular interest are three statues of the goddess Nike (6th century BC). In the same year the Archaeological Museum of Polygyros won the "Museum of the Year" by the Office of the prehistoric and classical antiquities.
