Pannonhalma Abbey - active monastery of the Benedictine Order, 20 km from Győr. This is the oldest monastery in Hungary, the basis in 996 and 1000 years later, exactly a UNESCO World Heritage, is the second largest in the world.

Pannonhalma Monastery was built by Prince Géza - the father of King St. Stephen on a hilltop St.Martin (according to legend the birthplace of St. Martin of Tours). Its architectural shape the course of history was changed repeatedly. Shattered pieces of the complex were replaced with new, consistent with the style of the time. As a result, in the complex architecture of the buildings visible different styles: Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque and neoclassical.

In 1541, the threat of war with the Ottomans was so obvious that the monastery, received by the time the status arhiabbatstva, was turned into a fortress. However, the thick walls of the monastery did not prevent the Turks several times to destroy the abbey and destroy the buildings. After the departure of the Turks at the beginning of the XVIII century in the Abbey has been an extensive construction and restoration work. The predominant architectural style of these buildings was the Baroque. Another reconstruction of the complex took place in 1995 - a year before the millennium of the Abbey of Pannonhalma and the recognition of UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Pannonhalma once visited by such famous personalities as John Paul II, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexy II (1994), Patriarch of Constantinople Varflomey and the Dalai Lama (2000).   I can complement the description
