Buinaksk historical museum, located on Lenin Street - the first museum in the history of the Republic of Dagestan.

In the second half of the XIX century. doctor Cavalry Regiment I. Kostemerovsky, with an impressive collection of exhibits, strongly took the creation of the museum at the headquarters of the regiment. In 1891, all assembled, he bequeathed to the future museum. The museum, created by the means of Kostemerovskogo and called his name, opened in the autumn of 1912. In the museum, there were 293 exhibits, not including photos and documents. The photographs were taken by renowned photographer Abuladze and brothers Rudnev, basically it was the ethnographic material.

Initially the museum had no premises of its own, so it is temporarily placed in the home of Governor-General. Over time, the museum began to replenish the fund and allocated space was not enough, the result was bought by an outbuilding at the mansion of Princess Pauline, located on the street Absheron.

In connection with the revolutionary events in 1918, the entire museum was almost completely looted. Some of the most valuable exhibits of the museum staff rescued, take them home. Gradually, the museum still has resumed its activities. Until 1934, he was called as a museum of the history of the revolution. After the decision of the Council of People's Commissars of Dagestan in connection with a visit to the city of "Great Leader" of Stalin, it was decided to create a house-museum of Stalin. In 1956, the museum received a new name - the National Historical and Revolutionary Museum. In 1975, after the earthquake, the former hotel and the old museum building were demolished.

In the post-perestroika period, the authorities decided to restore the museum as a local history with the transfer to it of all the exhibits of the revolution. Until 1993 the museum was housed in a former school first. Since that time, the museum is located in a building that was built in 1916 and was originally intended for the theater.
