Museum of Roman Art Canterbury was opened in 1961. Its collection includes the remains of an ancient Roman mosaic floor at home, things of that era and the reconstruction of the ancient city Durovern on the site which was founded Canterbury.

The museum is built just on the site of ancient Roman courtyard house, the remains of which were discovered after the bombing of June 1, 1942. The house, which was discovered on the site of a modern museum, is a typical instance of the ancient Roman city architecture .  Archeological excavations prove that the house was reconstructed several times, added new rooms and corridors, varied and mosaics decorating the floors .  During excavations in the surrounding streets have been found the remains of one of the largest in Britain, Roman Theatre, and the place of the modern streets of St. Margaret had found the remains of a public bath .  Some traces indicate that at the High Street used to be the basilica of the Roman forum .  During excavations conducted in the years 1976-1982 were marked the boundaries of the former location of the temple, but the temple was never found .  All these buildings were used from the first to the fifth century AD, about 410 years, when the Romans left Britain .  Even at the end of III century around the town were built defensive walls with seven gates .  Himself a former Durovern occupied an area of ​​approximately 53 hectares .

In addition to the mosaic floor of 300 years, in the museum you can see objects of culture and everyday life of the ancient Romans, including crockery, pottery, as well as the collection of weapons. It is interesting that a couple of double-edged swords was found in double grave that allegedly speaks about the murder occurred. Also interesting details tiles - one of them left the name of the master and the other is preserved imprint of a dog paw. A unique exhibit is the collection of silverware - spoons and jewelry made in the V century BC, and discovered in 1962 near Westgate Gardens.

In the museum is the reconstruction of a typical Roman house, in the kitchen which these dishes of the era. Also reconstructed the ancient Roman market, with stalls with clothing and footwear, fruit and vegetables. It is worth noting that in the shoe "department" are ancient pieces of leather, which makes the famous Roman sandals.

The museum is equipped with modern technologies and monitors, it shows not only the reconstruction of the Roman house, but "tape time" - the period of Roman rule in Britain. The museum also offers a variety of interactive learning programs for children.
