Szechenyi Chain Bridge

The bridge section - hanging chain bridge over the Danube connecting Pest Roosevelt Square and Adam Clark Square in Buda .  The bridge section - the first permanent bridge built in 1839 on the project of English engineer William Tierney Clark, author of a suspension bridge in Marlow .  The bridge was opened in 1849 and became a symbol of the unification of the two parts of the newly formed city .  The bridge got its present name in 1898 in honor of the Hungarian politician Count Istvan Section were who invested a lot of resources into its construction .  In addition section, a significant part of the financing took the Greek industrialist Georgioc Sinasi who had significant financial interests and land in the city, and whose name is inscribed in the base of the south-western part of the bridge on the Buda side .  Jewellery bridge made of cast iron .  Lions on each of the pillars were carved in stone by the sculptor János Marshalko .  They are reminiscent of the famous bronze lions at Trafalgar Square .

  In 1914, the iron structure of the bridge were reinforced and partially updated. During World War II, the bridge was badly damaged after the reconstruction it was restored and reopened in 1949.

  A plaque on the Pest side reads: "In memory of the two remaining bridges, designed by William Tierney Clark: Chain Bridge over the Danube in Budapest, and a suspension bridge across the Thames in Marlow, England"
