Liberty Bridge - one of nine bridges over the Danube in Budapest. It connects Buda and Pest near Gellért Hill. The bridge was built two years and was inaugurated on October 4, 1896 as part of celebrations of the 1,000th anniversary of the acquisition of Hungarian statehood. It was the third bridge over the Danube. Planning and design of the bridge has taken the engineer Janos Feketehazi. The original name of the bridge - the bridge Franz Joseph in honor of the emperor, who took part in the opening ceremony. His real name is taken from the name of the bridge nearby area.
The architectural style of the bridge - modern. Iron construction of greenish color with a protective coating is formed by three connected horizontal truss arches and flooring. The bridge has a length of 333 m, width - 20 m, spans up to 175 meters. High above the iron bridge on the mast are four gilded balls Turul (mythical bird) with its wings outstretched.
Like all the bridges over the Danube, Budapest Freedom Bridge was destroyed by January 16, 1945 during the retreat of the Wehrmacht. However, it was the first of the reconstructed bridge after the war - its construction took one and a half years. August 20, 1946 it was opened under the new name of Liberty Bridge. In 2007-2008, the construction of the bridge renovated and updated.
