Bragança, capital district of the same name, was founded in 1187. This ancient city, which is located in the north of Portugal, is one of the most neglected cities in the country and one of the most interesting because of its architectural monuments.
Braganca citadel, built in the XII century, is one of the most impressive monuments. Fortress, as well as the city, is named after the Celtic goddess of victory, Brigante.
Surrounded by thick ramparts citadel was built in 1130 Fernand Mendes, friend of King Alfonso Henriques. In 1187, in the King Sancho I built a castle with towers and a dungeon, which was later fortified by King Juan I. The citadel has 15 towers and 4 gates.
Near the castle is one of the famous towers - Princess Tower. According to legend, this tower was locked the wife of the Duke of Bragança, Donna Leonora, which the Duke of suspected treason and who later was killed.
In the central part of the Domus is Munitsipalis - City Hall in the form of a five-pointed star, the only remaining monument of Romanesque architecture in Portugal. Domus Munitsipalis - the only building of this form, not only in Portugal, but also in Europe. The building has recently been carried out restoration work.
Also on site is the Church of St. Mary, granite portal which surprises with its exquisite carvings. Inside attracts a vaulted ceiling painted cylindrical shape that is characteristic of the architecture of some churches of Bragança in the XVIII century.
