Regional Museum in Staritsa opened in 1919. The basis of its composition collection of local amateur archaeologists and local historians, the most outstanding personality among them IP Krylov. In the pre-revolutionary period, IP Krylov, along with the historian AP Vershinskaya published only in Staritsa Tver province for all Local History magazine called "Tver old."

At the beginning of its existence, the museum was located in the former Holy Dormition Monastery in the rectory housing. During the Great Patriotic War museum collection does not wait too long to take out and it was almost completely destroyed. Killed priceless manuscripts, objects, books. Since 1975 Staritskiy History Museum located in the building of Vvedensky church of the Holy Dormition Monastery. In 1977, the museum received the status of Staritsa Tver branch of United Museum.

In 2008, due to the fact that the building was transferred to the church Vvedensky Tver diocese and was included in the general complex of restored the Holy Dormition monastery in Staritsa to fund the revival of the Holy Dormition Monastery for the regional museum built a new building. The museum is located at the entrance to the city near the temple Ilyinsky.

The new museum, planning and interiors which fully meet modern requirements, has become a center of educational, research and patriotic work, which deals with the organization of leisure of the population of different age categories. It also hosts a variety of research activities.
