National Library of Greece is the largest library in Greece and includes the famous Athenian neoclassical trilogy, together with the name of the University of Athens and the Athens Capodistria Academy of Sciences. The building designed by the famous Danish architect Theophil von Hansen, under the direction of architect Ernst Ziller. The library is located near the center of Athens, between Panepistimiou Street and Akadimias.

The idea of ​​creating a library belonged to Jacob Meyer (Swiss philhellene, a member of the Liberation War of Greece). The idea was approved by the Greek government, led by John Kapodistrias. The library was founded in 1829 and headed by the Greek historian and philologist Andreas Mustoksidisom. At the end of 1830 in the collection of the library, there were already more than a thousand printed books.

The meeting quickly grew, the library moved several times, and in 1842 merged with the library of the University of Athens and has been placed in its new building. Then the collection already numbered 15,000 volumes. In 1866 the Royal Charter both libraries have joined officially in the National Library of Greece. In March 1888 it began construction of its own building library marble neoclassical. The building consists of three parts, two of them is a reading room with an impressive glass ceiling. The bookshelves are made of cast iron, which is not typical for the buildings of the time.

Today, the library fund consists of thousands of books in all languages. There is also a rich collection of Greek manuscripts, various historical documents and archives of the Greek Revolution, various periodicals and other publications. The museum has a collection of books and microfilm 149 incunabula (the largest collection of incunabula in Greece). The main problems of the National Library today is a lack of space, staff and a very limited budget.
