National Archaeological Museum in Athens - the largest archaeological museum in Greece and one of the most famous museums in the world. National Archaeological Museum was officially founded in 1829 and was originally located on the island of Aegina. Subsequently, it was decided to postpone the archaeological collection in Athens, proclaimed by the time the capital of the Kingdom of Greece. Construction of the new museum began in 1866 and ended only in 1889. The building was built in the typical European neo-classical style of the time. Over the next 100 years, the museum building was rebuilt and expanded several times, however, being able at the same time to create a harmonious architectural ensemble and keep the original style.

In the collection of the National Archaeological Museum contains unique ancient artifacts found during archaeological excavations on the islands of Santorini and Delos, in the famous Mycenae and Tiryns, in Sparta and Thebes, and Pylos in Athens, as well as in many other parts of Greece and abroad. The museum exhibition presents a variety of ceramics, bronze, ivory and stone, gold and silver jewelry, sculptures and statues, weapons, coins, murals and more.

Among the most interesting and valuable exhibits of the museum it is worth noting the gold funerary mask of Agamemnon, found by Schliemann at Mycenae (1600 BC), Antikythera mechanism (a mechanical device used to calculate the motion of heavenly bodies, 150-100 BC ) and a clay tablet with the image of the Eleusinian Mysteries (370 BC). No less interesting and Dipilonskaya amphora (8th century BC), a unique ancient frescoes from the island of Santorini (15th century BC), wooden panels Pitts, Lemnos stele (6th century BC. e.), Amphora Ness (7th century BC) Mycenaean "Vase with warriors" (12th century BC) and much more. Special attention is also deserved, and a number of statues of bronze and marble - the bronze "Antikythera Ephebe with" marble Kouros of Anavissos (540-515 BC), "Marathon youth" (4th century BC ), "Poseidon from Cape Artemision" (460-450 BC), a marble with Sounion Kouros Naxos (600 BC), "The rider from Cape Artemision" (2nd century BC .) etc.

The National Archaeological Museum has a library and excellent - more than 20,000 volumes (including a lot of rare books) on archeology, art, philosophy and religion, an impressive photo archive, periodicals, etc. Kept in the museum and personal diaries of Heinrich Schliemann.

In the southern wing of the museum is located Epigraphic Museum, which is a separate structural unit. In his impressive collection, which is considered one of the best of its kind, has more than 13,500 titles.
