Museum Réattu not only bears the name of one of the famous natives of Arles and stores his work, but also a dream Jacques Réattu - the truth embodied after his death.
Jacques Réattu born in Arles in 1760, and was the illegitimate son of a nobleman, and sister of the artist. His father, however, gave him an education, and then financed his training at the Royal Academy of Arts in Paris. As an artist Jacques Réattu was the representative of the revolutionary classicism. Part of his life he spent in Italy and Paris, and then returned to his hometown and, most likely about 15 years not engaged in creative work, at least it is not known. But Réattu acquired in Arles antique building, once belonged to the Knights Templar, he worked in it and wanted to create a community of artists in Arles, and this building will house their workshops. A similar idea in the late XIX century nurtured Vincent van Gogh, but he realized it was not possible.
The museum was opened in this house in 1868 - 35 years after the death of Jacques Réattu. His works now form the basis of the permanent exhibition of the museum, which occupies 12 halls. In them you can see his paintings, designs, collections of paintings collected Réattu. Here are stored, for example, six grisaille - work performed Réattu different shades of the same color.
