At the center of the small village of Akhmatova Alatyrsky district of Chuvashia is a historic building of the temple, consecrated in 1792 in honor of the patronal feast of the Holy Virgin. The temple is notable event in 1876, when the infant baptism took Stepan Dmitrievich Nefedov, who later became a world-famous painter under the pseudonym Erzya.
The old brick building of the Intercession Church of the eighteenth century was built as a double-height domed a refectory, in which there was a chapel of St. Nicholas, as well as the five-edged altar and bell tower. Not rich decor of the facade was designed in the Baroque style. At the end of the 1930s, the village church was closed, removed the dome with a cross and a building used by the granary. Last rector of the church - Emilian Kireev was shot and presently canonized. Later, the temple has undergone alteration at the country club. It lost the end of the composition of the building, pierced with doorways in the altar part of the window apertures bricked up and completely destroyed the roof, bell tower and dome.
In 1995 the building of the Pokrovsky temple returned to believers. For all the time of the restoration work was made only altar roof and the dome tent. Rural Orthodox community still hopes to restore the bell tower and return the original appearance of the temple.
