From the western entrance to the city stands the red brick temple Alatyr St. James the son of Alpheus, built in the late nineteenth century. An area of several acres around the church, now part of the city limits Alatyr called Yamskaya Sloboda.
James son of Alpheus Parish was founded in 1749, and the place of the stone building more than a century was a wooden church. In 1875, at the expense of the parishioners Yamskogo Posada began to build brick church with a bell tower. In addition to the church it was built two houses for the priests and the lodge. On the bell tower height of forty meters in 1894, it was installed the main bell, brought from Simbirsk on the team with twelve horses. In 1895, the construction of the temple was completed and was consecrated the high altar in honor of the Apostle James, son of Alpheus. According to parishioners bell was heard at a distance of ten kilometers (to the village Ahmatovo). It is also distinguished by a good Yamskoy temple chanting young singers.
In 1930, the church was closed Iakovskuyu, removed the dome, crosses and bells, leaving a beautiful building for storage of agricultural products. During the war, the premises used to house soldiers. In 1993 the building was returned to the faithful, and in May 1996 the church was re-James son of Alpheus consecrated Archbishop of Cheboksary and Chuvash Barnabas.
Today Yamskoy beautiful red brick temple partially restored, the area ennobled, and restored the former glory of the best in the motet Alatyrsky region.
