Church of St. Panteleimon, or as it is called, the Boyana Church - a small, but nevertheless very interesting temple is located in Boyana suburb of the capital of Bulgaria, near the foot of Vitosha Mountain. The building is built in several stages: the eastern part (the oldest) appeared no later than X-XI centuries. and was a small chapel. In the XIII century to it, at the direction of Tsar Kaloyan, the temple built a two-story, and after a few centuries, in the XX century, the architectural complex and added another two-storey western porch.

Church of St. Panteleimon is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, there are unique for their artistic qualities murals, which are, according to many researchers, some of the best specimens of the fine arts of the medieval period. Here are preserved wall paintings of two periods: XI-XII centuries. and 1259. Early frescoes are in dryish manner (however, traditional for the time) of the Byzantine style, and accompanied by inscriptions in the Greek language. But more interesting are the frescoes of the second period: in 1259 they were deposited on the wall directly over the old ones, and are universally recognized masterpieces of world art.

In total, the walls of the church of St. Panteleimon almost ninety depicted scenes from the Holy Scriptures. It is very common figure of Jesus Christ (more than 20 times). Here we see him at different ages and different situations that symbolizes his difficult journey and the obstacles he overcame to bring people to love and forgiveness. Also on the walls of the church you can see an image of St. Panteleimon, St. Nicholas (the temple was dedicated to him for some time), the Virgin Mary, the patron saint of the church Tsar Kaloyan and his wife - Desislava.

The uniqueness of the frescoes of the church lies in the fact that they were written in the style of Distinguishing painting. All the characters are extremely individualized and among the hundreds of people have not met one repeating: everyone expresses his character and his emotions. These murals also tend to realism in the mapping of reality: people of different social strata are drawn in clothes and surrounded by objects of its traditional status and time in which they lived.
