Wasserburg Castle was first mentioned in written records in 1185. Aristocrat Dietmar von Vassenburg considered the first owner of the castle. Until the 13th century Wasserburg remained in possession type of background Wasserburg, the most notable of which was Heinrich von Wasserburg, a relative of the famous Count von Liechtenstein. Legend has it that the background of Liechtenstein has taken a leading role in the liberation of King Richard the Lionheart. In 1238, the nobleman Otto von Haslau seized the castle. A couple of years later the estate became the property of an aristocratic family Puchberger.

In the 14th century the family background Toppel became owners of the castle, but in 1515 Christoph von Zinzendorf bought the castle. More than four centuries of race Zinzendorf lived in Wasserburg.

During the First World War, the castle functioned as a rest home for soldiers from the front. In 1923, Count Karl Hugo Seylern bought the castle, which is still owned by his family.
