The famous church of Panagia Limeniotissa, located in Paphos, is considered one of the oldest Christian churches in the island. It was built in the V century, even in the early Christian period, in honor of the Mother of God Limenitiossy, which is considered the patroness of the harbor of Kato Paphos. The church, or rather those ruins that remained from it, located very close to the city's port. Now it is surrounded by modern cafes and restaurants.
Throughout its long history, the Church of Panagia Limeniotissa twice was destroyed almost to the ground. The first time it happened in the VII century, when Cyprus was attacked by Arab armies. However, at the end of the same century it was completely restored. But the staid New Panagia Limeniotissa not long. After the devastating earthquake in 1222 that destroyed many other grand buildings on the island, the church has failed to rebuild.
Although the church today were virtually in ruins, there is still quite well preserved part of the foundation and one column, as well as virtually untouched by time, lovely mosaic floors, which are made in the traditional Byzantine style. Moreover, in our time we have been completely renovated a few columns of the temple.
Now this place is quite a lot of interest among tourists and even locals, as it has a really great historical and cultural value. These allow you to literally touch the ruins of the ancient history of the island and feel the atmosphere of the era.
